How much should I pay a contractor up front?

Standard industry practice in 2026 is 10–15% as the initial deposit on signing, then a progress-payment schedule tied to milestones — typically 25% after rough-in / demo, another 25% after major installs (cabinets, fixtures), and the final 25–35% withheld until punch list completes and you sign acceptance. NEVER pay more than 30% up front — it's a red flag for both fraud and contractor insolvency. Several states (CA, FL, MD) cap the legal up-front payment at 10% or $1,000, whichever is less.
