How much is the solar tax credit in 2026?
Last reviewed
The federal residential clean-energy credit (25D) covers 30% of installed solar PV cost with no cap through 2032, dropping to 26% in 2033 and 22% in 2034 before expiring. It also covers battery storage of 3+ kWh installed alongside the system. For a typical $25,000 solar install, that's a $7,500 federal credit. State and utility-level rebates have largely retired in 2026 (replaced by 25D), but battery-storage incentives still exist in CA (SGIP), MA (SMART), and NY (NY-Sun). Net-metering policy — the rate at which your utility credits exported solar — matters more for long-term economics than the up-front rebate.
