Should I file a storm damage claim on my homeowners insurance?

File the claim if the repair cost minus your deductible is greater than what filing will cost you over the next 5 years — typically $200–$600/year in premium increases plus a possible non-renewal at year 3–5 if you've had multiple claims. Rough rule: roof damage above $8,000 and a $2,500 deductible is worth filing; $4,000 damage on a $2,500 deductible usually isn't. Document everything (photos timestamped within 24 hours of the storm, NOAA storm event ID, contractor estimate) BEFORE calling your insurer — the difference between a 45% and 75% recovery is the quality of documentation.
